Photo shoot for digital package

This photo is one we may use on the front cover of our CD cover along side the image below, because of the poses i can add interesting effects to them making them appeal to my target audience.

this shot can be used as a feature page in the magazine me and my group are going to create this shot will be effective as the male actor is dressed to fit the genre of music which is Hip hop and R&B the hood and the baseball cap are key signifiers of the hip hop genre.

the reasons i will not proceed with this photo is because my Actor is supposed to represent the singer Will i am, whilst 95% of the costume fits his representation the Snap back takes this representation into hip hop where as Will I Am's genre is R&B so i will re shoot this pose but with a different hat.

out of the two images above this i would most likely use this one for the simple reason the representation of this shot suggests this actor (myself ) is an R&B singer the signifiers of this is the contrast between the costumes of the two male actors, Male actor 1 in grey has an urban hip hop representation whilst, Male actor 2 has a softer R&B representation and the combination of these two photos can be used to fit into the music genre of hip hop and R&B.

This particular shot of Male actor one is the one i would most likely use in the creation of our music magazine as his body language and facial expressions are in symetry with the signifiers of the hip hop genre making this photo effective.

The body language of Male actor two fits the R&B genre and can be manipulated well to in a magazine.

In conclusion i believe the photo shoot was successfull as we obtained a variety of photographs which i can use and manipulate effectivly to create a  digital package that is fit for purpose and relates to my music genre as well as being appealing to my target audience.

Video diary day 3 shooting the chorus/ hook

this was a very productive day got alot of footage for our music video, only negative is that it took ages to set up the Green screen and the lighting but overall very productive im happy with it.

Video Diary Day 3: setting up

This was the third day recording we had to re record scenes from the hook and verse of the songs, as the location we used last time didn't work well in our music video both visually and for the symbolism behind our music video.

Text messages with group members

This is a Conversation Between me and my group member Mahdi Maah me and him are organising footage to be taken for our music video as we felt there was too much performance scenes so we were informing each other of what we were doing to come closer to completing our project.

This was a conversation between me and Allin Nuh where we were organising the Photshoot for our magazine advert.

This is me and Allin Nuh organising a day to do lip synching practice so we will be well prepared and make minimal mistakes in the performance scenes of our music video making our project more time efficient.

Failed attempt at recording the hook rough draft first attempt.

This was our very first day recording the hook for our video i dont like this footage as the backdrop was tough and the lighting was too harsh but all in all it was an ideal learning curve for me and our group as we now know what not to do when filming e.g checking a location prior to recording and using lights effectively.

Target audience questionnaire

This questionnaire was particularly helpful when i came to gathering data. we then analysed the results and noticed that the lighting was a continuous issue in our video.

Location Analysis

These are the variopus locations we intend to use in our music video in order to appeal to our target audience through various ways, below are photos of these locations and a brief description as to why we intend to use them.

This is the electrical tower at Crystal palace park and the reason i feel this particul;ar location would be effective is because it can create a strong contrast between the Performers and there evironment in terms of height it urbanises the music video whilst allowing for a great shot at the same time.

This is a lake at Hyde park in central london the reason i want to use this location is because it has a romantic connotation behind it, i intend to have both male actor 1 and femal actress walking across the bank of this lake for a brief moment the will be no lip syncing in this scene as i feel it will be more effective to focus on the couple togather in the natural surroundings.

These Steps are in crystal palace park and instantly i thought this would be effective location for performance scenes where male actor 1 can rap on theses steps from a worms eye view, or male actor 2 can sing and dance on these steps with a long shot being used to capture the entire profile of male actor 2

Star image planning

This side by side photo, of both me and Will.i.Am. where i am representing myself in a similar fashion to "Will.i.Am" as he does the vocals on the chorus, His star images is a contrast to Common, "will i am's" star image maintains a certain level of sophistication whilst remaining urbanised. Me and my group came to the conclusion that I would be a perfect fit for the role of Will.i.Am, as I naturally dress in a similar fashion. therefore giving an accurate reflation of "Will.I.Am's" star image

This are side by side photo's, of both Allin and The Game. there are distinctive similarities between them both, Allin is good at representing the star image of  " The Game" as they both are dressed in urban clothing reflecting the fashion trend in the Hip-Hop genre of music. The reason we an still use Allin as the lead artist for our song choice is because his representation and collaberation with the star image of game combined with our song choice being in the hip-hop and R&B genre . As he is in our group it will be easier to get hold of him.

Male actor 2 costume and connotations behind them

these flat peak hats are classy and are perfect for an R&B singer, the general connotations behind this is a man/women with style and class which is a convention of R&B songs/Artists

These jeans are urban and trendy and the reason i want to use them is because it will help myself/male actor 2 fit closer with the audience of hip-hop and R&B these jeans are also something that the original supporting artist in the music video would wear it is also a direct link with "Will I Am's" star image

The clever combination of urban and classy is a difficult one to pull of, whilst trying to be original at the same time  and trying to keep with the general representation of "Will I Am's" star image these  brand of trainers are internationally known for beng a classy trainer to the extent some night clubs will even let you in with them on, so i see no better reason then to include them in the outfit of male actor two.

Hip-hop and R&B has to contain a level of bling and this is exactly why i have chosen to implement a black Shamballa necklace in the costume of male actor 2 as there is a direct link with bling and hip-hop as it is one of the conventions of being a hip-hop/R&B artist.

Elvis jesus is a well known design that combines the idea of trendy, urban and classy in all of his clothes and there designs so i see no other reason not to put this in my music video as it will work well with the look of male actor 2

The connotation behind having a scarf represents cold weather and cold feeling about being hurt, decieved and betreyed which is why i will have this in my music video on male Actor 2

Director case study

This is an analysis of Director X and all the music video he has directed, the reason i am looking at Director X is because he's style of music video fits our target audience and much genre and we can gain influence from him when me and my group finally reach the editing phase.

Music video analysis

Confessions part ii Music Video Analysis

In order to further develop own media production and to gain a better understanding of the in and out’s of creating, producing, and editing our own media projects. It was thought best to focus on Hip-Hop/RnB music, as we had decided this would be our chosen genre. By looking at this music video I would be able to gain an insight into target audience, different camera techniques and even creative ideas.

The video I analysed was Usher’s – Confessions part II. This video was a follow on from part 1. It is important to note that the song was from his own experiences and very personal. It is this key factor that may have had an affect on the making of the video and is again something we may be able to use.

The beginning of the video starts with Usher’s interlude in which he is talking on the phone. High key lighting has been used. This plays a larger part once the audience watches further into the music video. Soon enough, the lighting changes from high key to low key. The video becomes a lot darker and more intimate. The fact it is so light in the beginning is possibly because the status quo had not changed. After the phone call however this changes. Lighting could be suggestive of the protagonists, Usher’s, mood. Where at the beginning he was content. Now he has a secret. Something he has to get off his chest, so the music video follows his mood.

High-Key Lighting

Low-Key Lighting

To match the lighting is his clothing. From the images above it is very clear to see that in the first image,  his clothing is very light, and bright and generally a lot more happier. In the second image it is darker, and more dismal. Clothing is suggestive for the way the audience feels, where in the first image the audience themselves feel a lot more calm, a lot more happier. Where as watching Usher in his darker clothing, it reflects on the audience, viewing becomes a lot more intense.

One of the camera shots that stands out in the music video is the tracking shot at the beginning of the music video. Here an audience feels a very personal connection to Usher. Where he is walking away from everyone else, he is still with us (the audience).  Usher is singing into the camera which is tracking him. As if he is singing to us directly. Automatically the feel of the video changes, from something that was potentially a cheerful song. However once the status quo changes, the feel for the song turns dark, and a lot more intimate as he pours his heart out to the viewer. In many way the audience adopts the role of a friend, who Usher is confessing to.

A second technique used by Usher is silhouettes. Again playing on the use of light. The black could convey a meaning of darkness and unknown but more than that he is in a confession booth, playing on the words of the title. CONFESSIONS. As if he is confessing his sins to a Pastor.

Shots remain relatively low, and the video is broken down through the use of jump cuts. The fact Usher employs the use of so many jump cuts could fir the fact his mind is wandering as he reveals all his secrets to the audience.

|The narrative of the video follows the lyrics very closely.  However, rather than show the narrative through use of acting, Usher again simply reverts to the play on words of the title, revealing what he has done to the audience.

One thing to note is that Usher subverts the normal conventions of a Hip-Hop/RnB music video. For one he is the only actor seen, no one else, except for one case near the end.  Usher doesn’t use flashy cars, or special effects, or establishing shots. The general feel to the music video plays on the intimacy the audience feels with usher. Close up’s are the main shots used.

In the video it could be suggested usher aims not to represent any given social group. He is simply a man singing about his mistakes in life and in love.

The Male Gaze: Laura mulvey

Laura Mulvey created the term ‘Male Gaze’ in 1975. She believes that in film audiences have to ‘view’ characters from the perspective of a heterosexual male, which is agreeable when indepth analysis is done on music videos and other media such as T.V adverts.

—Features of the “Male Gaze”:

—The camera lingers on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a man's reaction to these events.

—Relegates women to the status of objects. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.

This theory applies to the genre in which we are trying to follow, the genre has known for being controversial regarding the "Male Gaze".

Examples of music video that conform to the male gaze
